Velvetweaving Workshop with Barbara Setsu Pickett

Barbara Setsu Pickett, an Associate Professor Emeritus in the Department of Art, University of Oregon, focuses her art and research on velvetweaving, shibori, book arts, and natural dyeing. She has studied velvetweaving in Italy, France, Britain, Japan, China, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and India; and has received support from the NEA, Fulbright Commission, Institute of Turkish Studies, Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation/Bellagio, and Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. She and her son run Mihara Shibori Studio and create highly textured silk scarves.

We have one opening for Barbara Setsu Pickett’s “Velvetweaving Getting Started” workshop on October 12 and 13, 2022. The price of the workshop is $180 and includes a light breakfast and lunch. Velvetweaving: Getting Started Workshop

October 12 and 13, 2022

Workshop: Weave a macro-velvet sample on a 4-shaft loom. Build your own velvet bobbin rack out of PVC pipe. Create unique pile colors by blending 20 strands of sewing threads and arranging them in the bobbin rack. Learn the silk weaver’s knot. Explore velvet textures like cut vs. uncut pile, voided areas, and different ground weaves. Learn how to adapt standard weaving equipment to velvetweaving. Examine Barbara’s velvet collection and learn to differentiate Western, European, and Asian velvets. See how Uzbeck weavers use dye and ikat to create complex color palettes of intricate patterns and design.
Level: Needs some knowledge of basic weaving.
Loom: 4-shaft loom required. Loom preparation instructions and materials list will be provided for distribution to participants well in advance.
Material Fee: $35
Maximum of 20 participants. If the workshop is filled, we will begin a waiting list in case there are cancellations.
Location: The Carriage House of the Julie Penrose House, 1661 Mesa Avenue, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80906.
Times: Classes will run 9:00 am – 4:00 pm daily. First day arrival is 8:30 am to allow for loom set up.
Cost: Final cost will be determined by August 1, 2022 but will be in the range of $140 to $165. This will include the $35 material fee. To hold your spot, a $50 deposit is required with your registration form with the balance due by September 9, 2022. The workshop will include a light breakfast and lunch.
Cancellation Policy: In order to host the workshop, we must have a guaranteed enrollment. If you cannot attend the workshop after registering, we will try to fill your spot from the waiting list. If we do not have a waiting list, it is your responsibility to find a replacement person or you pay the workshop fee.
