Cathy (Kakalecik) Coatney was born and raised in Pueblo, Colorado. She attended college at CSU in Fort Collins and received her Bachelor and Masters degrees in Textiles and Clothing. During studying for her Masters degree she took her first weaving class in the Art Department as an elective credit. Cathy taught at the college level for several years and became involved in costuming for the ballet, learning from a German war bride who had costumed the Berlin Opera!
Her clothing articles have been published in Handwoven and the Complex Weavers Journal. Two of her garments were seen on the runway at Convergence 2014, an international convention of handweavers. Cathy placed second in the international fiber competition entitled “Woven Together: Firestorm”, a commemoration of the devastating 2012 wildfire season in Colorado which included the Waldo Canyon Fire.
